The Government's Department for Education and Skills was established with the purpose of creating opportunity, releasing potential and achieving excellence for all. Its aim is to give children an excellent start in education, enable young people to equip themselves with life and work skills, and encourage adults to achieve their full potential through learning.

The Department has an ambitious strategy for the next five years and beyond which puts a clear focus on children, learners, parents and employers, not just in setting out what it wants to offer, but in designing ways of doing it that promote personalisation and choice.

DFES commissioned GIEU and the Windmills team to evaluate the economic impact of our work and this led to the production of two reports – Beyond Work Experience and The Windmills Principle.

Both reports demonstrate how providing individuals with good career management skills can have a positive impact on the economic growth of businesses they go to work in.

Such evaluation not only enabled us to objectively assess the direct and indirect impact of our work but also allowed us to inform regional and national policy on linking career management provision with business competitiveness and influence the development of future Windmills programmes and resources.
