Check that you're not busy worrying or wasting time on things that don't really matter to your happiness. Think of some things you really want to do more of.

Be honest

Make sure you're totally clear about what you want from life – and what's stopping you. Try writing your answer down below. Then think about your present work, your learning, your leisure interests and what you give back to society. Make a note of the changes you need to make to get what you want.

Be thankful

Look back over your life and ask yourself: What do you take for granted? What are you most grateful for? Whom do you need to thank? Now jot down a list of things you are grateful for.

Give a little

The quality of your life depends on giving as well as receiving. Do you put something worthwhile into the world around you – or are you always taking? What could you do today?

Learn to learn

The most important subject to learn about is yourself. If school exams are a bad memory, just remember that learning is more flexible today. You can study from home or with support from others. How could you invest some money in yourself – perhaps a book or course that can develop your skills or help you manage your life better.

Review your relationships

We all need people. Whether we're working, learning or enjoying our leisure we build a whole range of relationships. These need to include a few special people – true friends. Do you have the kind of people who have your interests at heart and believe in you without judging you? Are there any new relationships you need to build?

Have fun

Too many of us slog away and put in extra hours without achieving any sense of fulfilment. You need to find ways of freshening up your daily routine - it can even be as simple as phoning an old friend or taking a different route to the shops. Don't get stuck on the conveyor belt of life. Make things happen now

First give yourself some space to make things happen. Don't let yourself get bogged down by pressures or possessions. Then avoid the 'do it tomorrow' scenario. We all know tomorrow never comes. The present is precious so make the most it and decide what your first steps will be now...
