Most of us develop a vast range of skills as we go through life. These may be acquired from our environment, education, work, social activities, voluntary work, family or personal life.
This popular and effective exercise focuses on those special skills we are really good at and which we love using – our 'prime skills'.
The resource uses a matrix and a pack of 42 cards to help people develop their career focus and improve their ability to promote themselves.
It asks them to identify not only their full range of prime skills, but also the skills they enjoy using but need to develop – as well as the ones they are neither good at nor enjoy using.
Once an individual has identified these prime skills, ensuring their job includes as many of them as possible will guarantee they enjoy what they do.
Using these skills on a daily basis usually allows people to make their greatest contribution while feeling energised and motivated.
If their role calls for too many skills they are not good at or don't enjoy using, it can impair their performance and stop them achieving their full potential.
This resource can be purchased individually and is also a component of The Windmills Approach to Working, Learning, Playing and Giving.
As part of the WLPG resource, it is often delivered as part of a workforce development training programme in a group environment or on a one-to-one coaching basis. It has proved invaluable in helping individuals to create a win:win scenario encouraging them to make best use of their abilities to meet both their own and their organisation's needs.
The skills cards are also used to help individuals and organisations to identify training needs. In addition they are employed on most of our open Windmills Career and Life Management programmes and on graduate development programmes throughout the UK.
