windmills approach to working, learning, playing and giving

This inspirational and visually stimulating resource recognises it is difficult for people to look at their career without considering how it fits into the broader context of their whole life.

It helps them to look at the four key dimensions that make up their life – Working, Learning, Playing and Giving (WLPG) – and to consider how they can successfully blend these to create and live the life they want.

WLPG aims to help individuals achieve what is really important to them – their 'Life's Essentials' – and ensure they make the most of their potential.

It provides inspiration and encouragement from successful case studies of people who have already used these ideas to transform their lives.

Using the same simple skills we all bring to planning our annual holiday, the process takes individuals through a range of creative and thought-provoking activities.

In seven key stages it lets them explore how they want to live their life and helps them develop a customised life plan to make it happen.

Specifically designed for individuals, WLPG is mainly delivered in one of two ways:
Firstly by the Windmills team via group workshops. with up to 25 participants either within organisations or on open programmes designed for specific groups such as women. Secondly under a licence agreement which allows staff in learning and development roles within an organisation to be trained and licensed, to deliver Windmills programmes to their own employees and clients.

However we are also working with a number of partner organisations to develop individual licence agreements. This will allow their members who support others in career and life management to access a 'Train the trainer' programme that helps them deliver the programme internally.

WLPG has been used within organisations such as UK Border Agency and a variety of organisations within the NHS as a workforce development tool

The resource and training have helped such organisations to harness the experience, knowledge, skills and creativity of their workforce to maximise performance levels.

The WLPG process helps to produce highly committed and focused employees who can make best use of their skills and abilities to meet both their own and their organisation's needs.

This resource is also the core text for GIEU's Windmills for Women three—day open programme. This is delivered over a six-month period and has been completed by over 400 women to date.

Results have been excellent. More than half of the women moved to higher-level roles, almost a third received salary increases, while two thirds felt the programme made their existing job and relationships work better for them and stated that they felt more confident and motivated.
